2010

Looks like nothing will be happening much on here until 2010, hopefully got some reviews and interviews lined up for January onwards though so the blog won't be left unattended for long.

It just leaves me time to wish everyone that has read my blog this year a very Merry Christmas, have a great New Year and I hope you'll come back on when I'm back!

Toms Five 2010 Tip-Off's

Not long until Christmas, and whenever Christmas is near -the end of the year is too! With that comes the BBC's Sound Of...vote, where music journalists get asked to give their opinions on what bands or singers will be big in the coming months...seeing as i HAVEN'T been asked I thought I'd lay my opinions onto you anyway! The next suggestions should be massive within the next year, and if they're not...they should be! Also, make sure you have a look at the BBC poll and match the results up, if I've not got a couple of the same suggestions the BBC have got it all wrong!

1. Marina + The Diamonds

Marina Diamandis is not only stunningly beautiful, she makes amazing music which connects emotionally with anyone who listens to it. 'The Diamonds' are her fanbase, because it is not only her songs which connect to them, it is her personally - she has blogs in which she speaks with them and considers her music as a 'group collective' between them. With her latest single 'Mowglis Road' just out, the summers beautiful 'I Am Not A Robot' and her slot on the NME tour gaining her exposure, when her album is released in February I think you will all be hearing much more from her.

2. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

After several supporting slots with major bands such as Iglu & Hartly, Sam Sparro and La Roux, it looks like Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are beginning to make a path of their own. Their blend of Italian electro and pop is bound to make radio playlists up and down the country. Look out especially for 'These New Knights' and 'Dance The Way I Feel'. In all honesty, some of the songs do get a bit repetitive but this only makes it easier for fans to sing back to the band. But what is it with all this French mixing into band names? First La Roux, then Ou Est Le Swimming Pool... why now and why not Spanish? I guess we'll never know!

3. Bombay Bicycle Club

Why yes they've been around for a while, they won the Road to V competition in 2006, and yes this is one band that most likely because of this won't make it onto the BBC Sound of 2010 but I really think that this will be their year. After releasing their debut album last July and touring extensively playing venues and festivals, their exposure has increased massively. This band seem to show that working at getting what you want really does get achievements, working on some of their music even whilst still at school, and I predict that we will be seeing a lot more of them in 2010

4. Unicorn Kid

This young sprightly fellow is in fact called Oliver Sabin, he is 18 and is already creating storms in the music world. He is really one of the only chiptune artists that can make their music engage to a vast amount of mainstream listeners, not only hardcore chip fans. Having done his first headline tour, massive babycakes party shows and many other gigs in 2009 he is starting to release his material and as it gathers up, we can presume that a debut album is to be released in 2010. We are expecting the hype Crystal Castles got in 2008, and no doubt a similar Skins appearance will be involved in this... or maybe thats too old school now, I've heard Misfits are looking for bands.

5. Delphic

Half way through my tips now, and it seems like this list has been taking for ages...sorry if there is anyone out there continuously waiting refreshing the blog for my awaited tips. Anyhow, my fifth tip is Delphic. This band truly are one for the future, they have the indie sound to a par and huge similarities to the huge Bloc Party, who coincidentally they supported at the iTunes festival. Having performed on tv for the first time last month (November 2009) on 'Later With Jools Holland', they are starting to get noticed - not bad seeing as they've only been together since 2008. Releasing their album ('Acolyte') on January 11th will surely see them getting noticed, and I'm sure that Delphic will one of the first bands of 2010 to boost their popularity to an unimaginable scale.

MUSIC: Killa Kela - Nottingham Rescue Rooms : 4/11/09

If Killa Kela really does get asked what is beatboxing all of the time, he does give an amazing example. Mixing between his electro dubstep songs and his faultless beatboxing, tonight gave a glimpse of his awesome talent.

The onstage atmosphere with his backing band was fun and showed three guys just having a great time. This certainly rubbed off on the audience, getting them jumping and joining in even when the songs solely relied on his voice.

A lot of today’s crowd probably hadn’t been exposed to that much professional beatboxing, but Killa Kela is a perfect way of getting newbie’s into it through a seemingly perfect mix of music.

Word will inevitably spread about Killa Kela and when it does he will be filling venues like this twice over with his beats, this is truly beatboxing heaven!

MUSIC: Ash - Loughborough Students Union : 3/11/09

There are many reasons a band might play a certain location – audiences, venues, accessibility etc. But for Ash, none of those factors count. They are playing an A-Z tour of the UK and when queried about a location for letter L, Loughborough was obviously the best candidate. Take that London!

Looking perfectly natural on the Loughborough University stage, which has come from their years of playing on the music circuit, the band delved through their vast collection of songs. During their set they played such classics as ‘Girl From Mars’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’, with new songs also put on the table.

These new songs are part of Ash’s agenda to release 26 singles in a year and whilst it is safe to say these do not have the live brilliance of some of their old tunes, they still show a safe future for Ash.

Whilst other bands from Ash’s era are reuniting, Ash have continuously been around appealing to new fans and as more years go by, Ash will still be here and as good as ever. That’s if they make it through the very rock and roll Zennor Village Hall gig that will climax the tour! At least they know the alphabet!

MUSIC: Mr Hudson - Nottingham Rock City : 25/10/09 (Live)

Hands down, Mr Hudson is cool. He looks cool, he acts cool and he has cool celebrity friends. But with many of his latest album reviews not in his favour, how does he bode live?

From the moment his band start playing, you are lost in a frenzy of kids vibrating under the drum beat. His new album has only been out for a week, yet a large amount of the audience were singing along to his new songs. Seeing as he is only the support act on the bill this evening, you wouldn’t expect the response he got. His interaction with the crowd was impeccable, thanking them for making him feel less like the ‘mardy bum’ he had felt like in the afternoon, the crowd were going wild for him and you could see his happiness – after waiting since 2005, his music was getting the attention he wanted and deservedly so.

Whilst in the past Mr Hudson has failed to gain wide exposure, Kanye West has made him popular with one of the songs of the summer but his amazing live rendition of ‘Supernova’ minus the Kanye West vocals shows he doesn’t need Kanye or others involved vocally, Mr Hudson has finally arrived and is hopefully here to stay.

MOVIES: Horsemen [18]

Horsemen revolves around Aidan Breslin, a detective played by Dennis Quaid who is called in to investigate a murder in which all the victims teeth were left at the crime scene with the sentence ‘Come and See’ written around the area four times. This leads inevitably to a series of murders connected with the story of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the bible.

This is a film that seemingly can’t decide what genre it fits into, whilst it starts off looking promising as a general thriller, the extreme violence and torture scenes soon switches it to a gorefest. A particular scene involving a homosexual killing himself with a saw is particularly gruesome and offensive. The movie wasn’t even backed up by a good script with many inconsistencies throughout.

However, within the dark were lights shining, such as Ziyi Zhang who plays Kristin, the supposed grieving daughter of a victim with such flare and passion but she could not bring this movie back. The final straw was how Horsemen climaxed, it ends so abruptly with no adequate conclusion that you’re left confused about what has just happened.

Horsemen is a film that had all likelihood that it would be good, with big name actors being involved and a good synopsis, but it proved that without a well thought out script a film is nothing.

me me me

There is a reason the Paolo Nutini and Enter Shikari reviews were a bit delayed, I went to Cornwall fully intending to still publish the reviews but not realising that Sennen Cove doesn't seem to have any access to the internet at all =/ It was quite good though, especially finding the sourest sweet I have ever tasted literally burning your tongue as soon as it touched!

However, I am now back and ready for business, hopefully this very evening there will be two more reviews: Horsemen (the movie) and Mr Hudson live. If one or both aren't on tonight, feel free to slap me and then wait, they'll definately be on in the next two days! Then before Halloween, I'm doing a comparison of two of the UK's scariest attractions! That's when I finish this backcatalogue of reviews that seem to have gathered up with me writing them all as fast as I can.

Once that happens, I look to the future, I'm in talks to review Soft Toy Emergency, Frankmusik and also interview Mike Fielding (Naboo from The Mighty Boosh), all these COULD be coming up, no guarantees but we'll see!

Over and out,

MUSIC: Enter Shikari : Camden Roundhouse - 10/10/09 (Live)

For those of you who may not have been to a gig, it starts off with one or two support bands playing before the main act. Whilst at most gigs, crowds grin and bite their tongue if a support band isn’t to their taste, Enter Shikari fans haven’t got that ability within them apparently. True Tiger were the victim of an onslaught that came from the crowd. Glowsticks were encouraged to be thrown, but as the crowd began jeering and demanding the next support act whilst sticking their fingers up at the band, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for True Tiger – my hat goes off to them for sticking it out and finishing their set, yet this incident left me a bit apprehensive for how the night would turn out.

It turns out I needn’t have worried, the crowd was relatively calm, which was unusual as they should have been going mental! The music is untouchable and Enter Shikari have a fantastic ability to perform perfectly live, however the live presence just didn’t seem to be there. Some would say this is due to their new album ‘Common Dreads’ which seems to be stepping away from the Metalcore of their ‘Take to the Skies’ debut, however the new songs slide in perfectly adjacent with the old songs, especially Zzzonked which was astounding. It’s also unfair to say that the band aren’t trying, they put their all into playing their songs live as they obviously did when writing them, with the band being political in their messages. There just didn’t seem to be anything particularly special about the performance.

I was quite happy later on then to be informed by a fan that this wasn’t one of their best gigs, she in fact put it that this was one of the worst out of the tens of times she has seen them. Maybe they had a bad night in Camden, maybe this could have been due to the fact they’re friends with True Tiger who the crowd had thrown so much abuse at. Hopefully opportunity will rise for me to see Enter Shikari again and see them do as good as I’ve been told they can, I will just have to wait until then.

MUSIC: Paolo Nutini : Nottingham Rock City - 28/09/09 (Live)

Paolo Nutini is only at the tender age of 22, yet when he walks casually onto the stage as his band The Vipers play there is no fragility showing, just pure love. Love for music.

There is something strange about his persona, he does not seem to be the most confident person in music – hardly talking to the audience at all within the hour and a half set, yet on the other hand when he’s singing, confidence seems to ooze out of him leaving the audience mesmerized. His pure passion for what he is doing is contagious; people who may not have been the greatest fan of Paolo before the gig were leaving as in love with his music as he is.

His show itself would not be out of place in a jazz club, playing mainly songs off his latest album ‘Sunny Side Up’ or classic tracks reworked to sound like his new album, the rhythm is intensely catchy. You can see his appeal as the audience are embraced by the songs but the thing that is most fascinating as you look around the audience is the total variety of people. You have people from all works of life, young and old, those that listen to Radio One and those that listen to Radio Two – all coming together because Paolo’s songs cannot fail to connect with you; they preach messages of love and happiness which touches everyone who listens to the lyrics.

As his hand moves along with the music and Paolo crouches over the microphone, you can see he is in his own little world, and with a live performance like this - what a nice little world it must be.

COMEDY: Rhod Gilbert - And The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst : Loughborough Town Hall : 05/10/09 (Live)

To write a review of Rhod Gilbert, who within 10 minutes of his set had launched his anger straight towards the press and their reviews of his personality, is somewhat unnerving. Should I take it as a reason to lay into him and his anger problems which are a main theme to his new show or do I do the opposite, being unordinarily nice to him which would make me one of the only ones who is ‘on his side’ as he so pleadingly puts it during the show.

Loughborough gave Rhod not one but two warm welcomes after one man in the audience felt that the welcome had not been good or personal enough, so Rhod came out again making the audience address him personally. In fact the audience were as much a part of the show as he was. One mention of swine flu came up with a series of pig jokes from the crowd with the jokes not fading out for at least twenty minutes, leaving Rhod to jokingly suggest he ‘might as well go’.

However, Rhod did have a show to do and a beautifully structured one at that. Whilst his rants and ravings at the newest models of Hoovers, washing machines and a certain brand of smoothies may have seemed ridiculous – his anger towards these things was hilarious, especially an anecdote about being kicked out of ‘Fruit Towers’ after claiming the packaging invited him to have a look round. From these rants though, came a much more intense climax towards the end which many probably did not expect, however the climax left the crowd laughing so hard their jaws ached and left them begging for more, which they received with a video excerpt from Rhod’s radio show.

Much of the crowd had only seen Rhod before from his various television appearances, especially the variety performance which he himself mentioned, yet I can’t help feeling there will now be many who want to see him live again as soon as possible as this is the environment where Rhod really surpasses himself.

COMEDY: Russell Howard - Dingledodies : Nottingham Concert Hall (Live)

Russell Howard’s childlike exuberance engages the audience and makes for a good hour and a half of comedy. With a lot of the audience being teenagers, in particular screaming girls who went wild when one of their friends name came up in Russell’s jokes, I did not know how the show would capture an older audience. In two words, it wouldn’t, an older generation simply wouldn’t understand or like his humour, but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Russell’s on stage presence is awesome, drawing the audience in with his energy and his charisma. You can’t help but love him, he’s the kind of person all men would want to have a drink with and all women would want to introduce to their mum, as one woman asked in the q and a session at the end of the show.

Russell seems genuinely delighted and entranced with everything, his personality rubs off on everyone but you are left wondering how long he will last with this childlike enthusiasm, he will grow up and then where will his comedy be? But instead of worrying about this, catch him before he grows up, catch him whilst he’s hot.

Dingledodies are people who you cannot fail to be uplifted by, and so is apt due to the fact that noone in the theatre would have failed to leave without a smile on their face after spending time with Russell Howard.

MOVIES: My Bloody Valentine 3D [18]

Slasher films usually stick with what they do best, bloodthirsty gore and lots of it! Not often do you find a slasher that has quite a deep storyline and twists involved as well. My Bloody Valentine 3D has both, surpassing expectations of the film greatly. How well both are used is a different story.
The film revolves around Tom Hanniger, a man returning to the site of a horrific mining disaster which he caused, and which ended up sending a miner Harry Warden mental. Hanniger has plans to shut the mine but these are stopped by the towns people, plus Warden is back in town.

The film stretches the 3D effects to their limit with one scene in which a gun is pointed at you and a bullet is shot being particularly effective. The thing is with 3D generally, at the cinema it works and you come out amazed whilst on your own television screen, you are left unimpressed and disillusioned at the effects. 3D is not meant for DVD and this is one of the things filmmakers are looking past now, making 3D for the hell of it and not realising people just don't want to be sitting in their lounge wearing cardboard 3D glasses staring at a screen seeing red and green for an hour and a half.

My Bloody Valentine has much more depth in the characters, each character suspicious in ways and leaving you guessing right up to the last scene who exactly is Harry Warden. The film is a good horror, 3D effects are a bit overused but this is made up for with a deeper storyline.

MAGIC: Derren Brown - Enigma : Adelphi Theatre (Live)

It's hard to write a review of Derren Brown, not only because the audience has been sworn to secrecy about the contents of the show but also because Derren leaves you in a speechless state as you leave the theatre.

Everything about the show works, from the set, Derren's awesome showmanship and the staging of the show, you slowly become to realise that everything that happens during the two and a half hour show has a purpose and there is no way that you could figure anything out, Derren is
just too smart for the likes of us!

The tricks that happen on stage are mindnumbing and amazing but it is also frightening how Derren gets the volunteers to do some things, frightening to think of what could happen in the wrong hands. This is especially shown when Derren attempts to put a trance on the whole audience, leaving several in a 'sleepwalking' state listening to Derren's every word.

I tried as hard as possible to be part of the show, with my face being used in a more elaborate Derren Brown version of guess who, hints for people who want to be involved - get to the theatre an hour early! Quite a few people on my row caught a Frisbee to get on stage but, unfortunately for me, it was not my time to be manipulated by Derren.

Derren Brown’s show is unique, there is nobody in the same league as what Derren does, the show is scary but most of all, the show is very, very entertaining, if you miss Enigma - you really do miss out!

MUSIC: Official Secrets Act : Loughborough Students Union (Live)

It’s a dark time in Loughborough when Room 1 at the Students Union is only around 40 people full for a gig that is only £5.50 and a band that are sure to make the big time within the next year. Official Secrets Act played Loughborough on the 28th and as they walked out onto the stage you couldn’t help but notice a sense of disappointment on their face. The night before they had played a sold out London gig with The Rakes at The Lexington and now, here they were playing to forty people.

The Daves started the night off with their raw cockney Britpop music but the songs sounded rather similar to each other and the set seemed never-ending with much of the audience fading from the immediate area around the stage half way through their set. The mood was instantly changed as soon as The Rugged Soundsystem stepped on though, sounding like a mix of the Flobots and Isaac Hayes, the band really created a party environment with everyone on their feet moving to the groove.

Official Secrets Act finally walk on at 11.15pm sporting glitter stripes on their faces and giving a fantastic opening song really proving their status as one of the bands to watch this year. During their 45 minute set, they previewed songs from their upcoming album ‘Understanding Electricity’ and throwing in their brilliant singles ‘So Tomorrow’ and ‘The Girl From The BBC’, which show their excellent lyrical capacity and show lead singer Tom’s amazingly quirky vocals. Everything about the gig was brilliant, other than the audience members and without the right amount of audience members you cannot create enough atmosphere. I just hope that next time Official Secrets Act come round, more people take the time out to go check them out, they’re very much worth it!

Their Album ‘Understanding Electricity’ is out now and for tour dates go to their myspace!

COMEDY: Ed Byrne - Different Class : Leicester Curve (Live)

This is Ed’s second tour of this particular show, but he is still selling out theatres across the country and it is easy to see why- he tells hilarious life stories, which he freely admits to making up, but this reality does not break down the humour, Ed Byrne is at ease on stage and his inoffensive jokes make it easy for anyone to warm to him. This was shown by the variety of people he had in the audience, there was a mixture of teenagers, middle aged and even pensioners.

The main concept of the show is of class, and Ed not being able to understand which class he fits in to. But throughout the show there are other recurring ideas, such as how people always come up with a great come-back when the argument was at least a week ago. Ed had the whole audience laughing, and even audience interaction when he called a man a ‘slimy prick’ for getting out of going to a wedding fair was light-hearted and the man laughed along. This brings up the final topic of the show, Ed’s ridicule of the wedding industry, which would inevitably be in the show due to his marriage eight months ago, and his complaints about the cost of the wedding industry. The fluency and timing of the jokes was perfect and it was a fantastic 1 hour 45 minute set from the comedian.

Ed’s funny anecdotes and musings on everything from goths and emos to women’s rights and his own poor dvd sales show his fantastic wit. Ed Byrne is back and better than ever and has mass appeal as established from a conversation overheard from one of the audience on the way out, ‘I told you you’d enjoy it’, no-one could fail to enjoy Ed Byrne!
*****

MUSIC: The Whip - X Marks Destination (Album)

The Whip are one of the latest bands to come out of the Manchester scene and give fantastic electro sounds full of bleeps and of course (seemingly in every new band at the moment) synthesisers. In many of the songs on the album, lyrics are few and repetitive but this is made up for in the music which can only be described as a crazy mix of electro and pop.

The album jolts in with the fantastic ‘Trash,’ the new single from the band introducing every sound the album contains slowly but efficiently until the raspy voice of Bruce Carter kicks in with the repetitive ‘I wanna…’ which
leads up to an amazing chorus bound to get anyone off their feet onto the dancefloor. The song does, however, run for longer than it needed to and some people may lose interest with it after it passes the three minute mark.

Other songs that stick out on the album are ‘Divebomb’ and ‘Blackout.’ ‘Divebomb’ being the big club hit of last year and it is up where with the best of electronic music and ‘Blackout’ is a dark, weird song which is so unique compared to the other songs and is a welcome edge to the album.
Though the album does sometimes become tiresome, other songs make up for this. The album looks to be one of the must-haves of the year and will appeal to anyone who is into indie but wouldn’t mind experimenting with some electro/dance music.
